It’s National Doughnut Day – Have a Doughnut Sandwich!

National Day Calendar reports that National Doughnut Day was created in 1938 by The Salvation Army  to honor the Donut Lassies who served doughnuts to soldiers in World War I.   It was a fundraiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army to help the needy during the great depression.

The Salvation Army still honors veterans on National Doughnut Day.  Check out the doughnut designs made and served to veterans – Salvation Army Celebrates National Doughnut Day.

In honor of this day we have scoured the foodiesphere for inspired doughnut sandwiches and there was no lack of inspiration.  Check out some of our favorites.

Chocolate Dipped Coffee Ice Cream Doughnut Sandwiches from Tastespotting

Three ingredients is all you need for this inspired delight.  A doughnut, some coffee ice cream, and  a bag of chocolate chips.  Melt the chips, sandwich the ice cream then dip and enjoy. Sometimes the simple things really are the best things.

The Fat Boy – Doughnut Grilled Cheese with Bacon and Maple Glaze from Grilled Cheese Social

One of our favorite things is a waffle with maple syrup and a side of bacon that gets touched every so lightly by the dripping maple syrup to create a delicious perfect bite.  This inspired creation by Mackenzie Smith over at Grilled Cheese Social doesn’t leave anything to chance.  Follow her lead – go get your free doughnut and make your own sandwich creation.

A maple glazed doughnut, some crispy bacon, Meunster cheese, a little pat of butter and voila you too can be in doughnut sandwich heaven.
