The back of the grilled cheese truck reads: “You Can’t Say Cheese Without Smiling”. Try it – it’s true you can’t, see, you are smiling now – you know you are.
And smile we did today as we experienced the original Grilled Cheese Truck for the first time on our continuing travels on the Great American Sandwich Trail.
In two words I would sum up this experience as “simply delicious.”
These sandwiches are not about the fancy bread or the stunning appearance – they are about taking you home, making you feel good, and putting a smile on your face.
I was home just last week and my mom made french onion soup. For the record, my mom makes the best french onion soup, but I digress. When I saw the “French Onion Soup Melt” I had to give it a try.
It was described as Gruyere Cheese with Onion Soup Compote and a Parmesan Crust on French Bread & Served with Onion Soup Broth.
The Parmesan crusted bread gets a little hard, just like the crouton on french onion soup but when you dip it in the onion soup broth it really does taste like a warm comforting bowl of french onion soup. The best part of it being the beautifully and properly caramelized onions that make up the onion soup compote. I bit into it and I felt like I was at home having soup with my mom. The flavors warmed my heart and my soul.
With a continued focus on happy food, The Grilled Cheese Truck has chosen to serve tater tots rather than the typical french fries. What a genius move. They serve them with homemade sauces including a sriracha sweet chile sauce – oh my oh my. My cooking chum Merry could not stop eating them saying it took her back to childhood when tater tots were a regular part of her menu plan. As she said it, she actually jumped and skipped, just a little bit.
The special of the day was a Caprese Grilled Cheese with Fresh Mozarella, tomatoes, basil, and a balsamic glaze served on perfectly toasted bread. It was light and refreshing and probably my favorite bite of the day.
Let’s talk for a minute about the toasted bread here. Have you ever ordered a grilled cheese in a diner and it is hardly toasted – like the grill only touched the bread for a moment and you aren’t getting that toasty butter goodness that you so crave.
That won’t happen at The Grilled Cheese Truck. Each sandwich is lovingly spread with butter mixed with a little mayo and placed on a flat top grill until it is melted to a crispy, toasty, deliciousness.
Finally, we couldn’t pay a visit to Grilled Cheese Truck without trying their signature Cheesy Mac & Rib. A grilled cheese complete with cheddar cheese, house smoked BBQ pork, southern mac and cheese and caramelized onions. Hearing the description I expected it to be overwhelming rich but it was actually nicely balanced. The BBQ sauce was a sweet style sauce which I thought added a nice balance to it but my cooking chum wasn’t a fan of the sweet style sauce. The ingredients could have been more evenly distributed instead of bunched up in the middle so every bite was equally delicious but overall a tasty well balanced sandwich.
