A Melded Menu for Burgers or Sushi

Of all the stops along The Great American Sandwich Trail, this could be the craziest combination ever. In Charlotte, North Carolina  The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar fuses two great food items seamlessly on the same menu — burgers and sushi. Notice we didn’t just say burgers or sushi. And they serve up these two cuisines much better than you might initially think. In fact, they COMBINE the two together into a one-of-a-kind dish called ‘burgushi’ (but more about that later).

Not only does this menu mash-up of burgers and sushi work, it kills it. The Cowfish started in Charlotte in 2010, quickly attracted crowds, and they have since expanded to locations in Raleigh, Atlanta, Birmingham, and Orlando.

The Cowfish has a bright, fun atmosphere featuring custom artwork that are re-imagings of more famous paintings plus vibrant music. The restaurant has a saltwater aquarium filled with live cowfish and also features a virtual aquarium that assigns guests a fish to indicate their place in line when waiting.

A Comprehensive Menu

The Cowfish offers a very comprehensive menu of sushi, burgers and a blend of the two. The burger menu is a full page long and includes over twenty pre-made burgers as well as make-your-own options. All of the burgers are made from 1/2 pound of natural beef, turkey, lamb or bison, hand formed and grilled fresh to order. While there we tried two of their more unique sandwich offerings.

The Thundering Herd and Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love

The Thundering Herd Bison Burger is a half-pound chipotle bison burger, with white cheddar cheese, avocado salsa, lettuce, chipotle aioli, and red onion, served on a sesame seed bun. This is a thick burger and a (delicious) mouthful. Cooked medium it is juicy with a hint of spice from the chipotle in the burger as well as the aioli.

The other burger was (perhaps) even more unique. So unique in fact, it goes by two names: The Cowfish has Officially Left the Building a.k.a The Hunka Hunka Burnin’ Love Burger. As the name implies, the burger is inspired by the King of Rock and Roll and his (reported) eating habits. It is a full-pound beef burger (you can order it as a single if you are feeling a little under the weather) with creamy peanut butter, fried bananas, and bacon on a brioche bun. Peanut butter? Yes, peanut butter? The creamy, nutty and salty flavor of the peanut butter enhances the meatiness of the burger. It also makes the burger super juicy and adds umami, leaving you wanting more and more.

Burger or Sushi? Can’t Decide? Mix em Together.

Then, there’s the “burgushi”. Like no sandwich or sushi you’ve ever had, it’s a burger in sushi form in an odd, and very tasty way. Burgushi is sushi make out of typical burger ingredients: seasoned all natural beef,  cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, and red onion, wrapped in soy paper and potato strings then flash fried. Rather than spicy mayo or sweet eel sauce, ‘burgushi’ is topped with ketchup, mustard, dill pickle and Roma tomato.

If you are in the mood for burgers (and sushi), make The Cowfish a stop next time in the Charlotte area.
